Last class, we started talking about the events in art in France that pre-dated the emergence of Realism.
In order to understand the historical context, we need to learn about the major historical events in France.
1. Watch this really brief yet clear discussion of the French Revolutions and provide a time -line of events leading up to the emergence of realism around 1850 in France. Do not give every single detail. Learn for your self and only list the major events in the time-line (starting with 1789 and ending in 1848) you will submit.

2. If you are not familiar with Victor Hugo’s Les Miserables (1862), at least watch the part of a movie with one of its songs at

This novel was popularized in musicals and movies. You highly likely saw the movie or read the novel. In any case, give a brief summary of the novel or the musical or movie. Again, give the historical context. Again, you either are familiar or at least researched the novel so you know what it is about.
3. I am attaching a selection of texts from Petra ten-Doesschate Chu: Nineteenth-Century European Art (2002) and I am listing questions regarding some events that pre-date the emergence of Realism. Answer the following:
1. Discuss the painting Liberty Leading the People in relationship to historical events/the revolutions in France.
2. What enabled the rise of a new way of imagery, Honore Daumier’s for example?
3. Explain the roots of this epoch’s caricature?
4. What was the aim of such imagery at this time?
5. List the new printing techniques used including a new process of chemical printing. and discuss “daguerreotype” in one paragraph.
6. Reflect on the origins of Realism, and, again its historical context.

The first two questions require a brief answer. Several sentences each only.
The third question requires paragraph long answers for the points listed.
