Discuss and demonstrate understanding of the concept “Coded Language” and apply that concept to a novel. What does this mean? You need to show how Gilead uses its own coded language to maintain its authority over people. Language is a powerful tool. It is a technology that we often completely naturalize and normalize. We often forget that it is a completely fabricated and constructed system of communication that is no more natural to humans than cell phones. Language is not just verbal; it is also in what we see. Atwood’s The Handmaid’s Tale provides clear examples of how language can and does influence, control, and oppress a society. In a minimum 6 page MLA essay, argue how, through the use of coded language, the Republic of Gilead is able to so radically change the United States of America. In other words, how did a theocracy manage to replace a democracy and make many people accept this change? What words do they use that have double meanings and how are these words used? What colors? What signs? Look at all the way information is communicated or not communicated and analyze each one to show how Gilead is able to control its population through language. You want to focus on how Gilead purposefully changes or limits language in order to make people accept this theocracy. You do not want to simply describe the brutality Gilead uses to enforce order; you want to focus on the subtle means of manipulating language or conveying messages behind brutality that actively change the way people think.
