Child Study Project (fieldwork assignment) This assignment asks you to write up your comprehensive study of a child labeled with a disability or described as a “struggling learner.” In your final project, include your data (Part 1), child study descriiptive report (Part 2), and suggested strategies (Part 3). Label the parts of your paper as indicated below. Please use 12 point Times New Roman font, double-space and use APA style guides for citations and include a reference sheet.

Part 1: Data Take fieldnotes as you observe the child. You should observe the child as he/she engages in academic tasks as well as ways in which he/she negotiates a range of social contexts (e.g., lunchroom, recess, related arts, hallway, before and after school). What do you notice? Please record the date of each observation and length of time. You may submit handwritten field notes in this first section. (No need to type your notes unless you want to.) In addition to fieldnotes, you should include photos of relevant work the child has produced. You could also choose to tally behaviors in addition to your observations and reflections. You need to submit at least TEN pieces of data (such as fieldnotes, reflections, tallies, and photos of child’s work).

What do you notice? 3. Briefly describe the neighborhood in which the school is located. Are there trees and parks? Businesses? Housing? What do you notice? 4. Write a character sketch of this child—such physical descriiption, physical presence/gestures, habits, disposition, temperament. If you are aware of any relevant background information about the child, you may include it with a notation about where or from whom you got the information. 5. Based upon your observations, reflections, and data analysis, create learning portrait of the child (e.g., strengths, challenges, interests, preferences, modes of thinking and learning) and as a member of the class community (e.g., connections with peers and adults). Be sure to support your thoughts about this child with specific examples from your observational data.
