Assignment # 2 – Chapter 4 Ethics and Corporate Social Responsibility Use the ethical decision-making model (located in chapter 4 of your textbook) to deal with the following situations (Choose 2 out of the 4 scenarios listed to answer): You are the Director of the Tiger Athletic Fund, the fund-raising arm of your NCAA FBS school, Central City University. One of your major long-time donors, Ray Mosswell, whose name adorns the football practice facility, recently made a significant investment in a construction company owned by an international business with an abysmal human rights abuse record, having recently been tied to human trafficking. Needless to say, the story made national headlines and has lit up social media. It is time to renew his annual donation to Tiger Athletics. You are the AD at Marion Heights College. A big baseball fan, you often go to the games and the players know and respect you. One of the players, Matt, comes to your office and asks to speak with you privately. Matt is a highly skilled player who is projected to be taken in the early rounds of the draft. Breaking into tears, he tells you, “I had to go to the doctor last week and I found out that I am HIV+ and I don’t know what to do. But please, please, don’t tell Coach….don’t tell Coach…” You are the AD at Big State University, a successful NCAA D-I basketball program. Members of your men’s basketball team approach you with a request. They would like to wear warm-up shirts that read “Black Lives Matter” before the next game, which is against your biggest traditional rival, Western State University. The game falls at the same night where the local police union is scheduled to be honored at halftime. The players have already talked to the head coach, who supports their actions for this game. You are the Assistant Director of Scholastic Marketing for Under Armour. It has come to your attention that numerous high school accounts which you manage still use Native American mascot names which many people feel are offensive. Recently, you received a letter from the American Indian Movement (AIM) indicating that if Under Armour continues to supply schools using these mascots with their products, they will call for a national boycott of the brand. You know that Native Americans’ annual buying power exceeds $90 billion and many of those dollars could go to sporting equipment and apparel. One way they can do so is by involving members of the athletic department, particularly student-athletes (SAs), in community service projects. If you were the Athletic Director, what might be some approaches your department could use to get your SAs involved in community service? Who should choose the activity? SAs? Coaches? The AD? A team of people? What types of community organizations would make good partners? How can you get coaches on board to help? If you were a SA in high school or college, did you ever do community service? How was the experience? Sometimes coaches use community service projects as punishments for athletes who have broken team rules. The coaching staff for a sport will tell the SA they have to perform a certain number of community service hours in order to make up for their poor behavior. The SA may have no interest whatsoever in really helping the community, just in getting in their hours as mandated. Is requiring someone to do community service an appropriate punishment for breaking team rules? Why or why not? As an alternative, how could the athletes be disciplined?
Assignment #4 – Chapter 10 Olympic Sports Case Study You are lucky enough to be involved with putting together the Olympic Bid for the Summer Olympic Games in 2032. You have a choice of the following cities: Boston, Central Florida, Dallas, Denver, Philadelphia, San Antonio, Seattle and St. Louis. For your choice of the cities, you have been asked to help assemble the bid documents for six of the required IOC bid themes*: Choose a city Research the bid themes that are required components of the Olympic bid (see hint) For your choice of city, explain as thoroughly as possible what information will go into the six sections you are writing. You will need to do Internet research to learn more about the specific city. Explain (specifics) why your bid information is worthy of IOC support. What procedures might you implement to ensure that all procedures and actions detailed in the bid document meet the highest legal and ethical standards? Be thorough. This assignment should be more than a page long. Make sure you identify the six bid themes you are writing about for your city of choice. Each bid theme should be a separate titled section.
