What types of learning activities might you use to develop your students vocabulary?
As educators, you must be able to teach students academic vocabulary that is key to learning the specific content. Benjamin Franklin said, “Tell me, and I forget. Teach me, and I remember. Involve me, and I learn.”
Discussion:
Consider a unit you are preparing to teach and brainstorm a list of 7-10 vocabulary words that will be used. Group your words into tiers and share them.

You can also consider any content area vocabulary, such as social studies or the sciences.

Tier One words are the basic words used in everyday conversation, such as “and,” “the,” and “food.”
Tier Two words are words that occur frequently in academic texts like “product,” “community,” and “evidence” that are crucial for reading and responding to grade-level content. Process words like “estimate,” “describe,” and “summarize,” as well as “discuss,” “describe,” “compare,” “evaluate,” and “predict” also fall in this tier. According to Beck, Tier Two words are the most appropriate candidates for explicit, in-depth vocabulary instruction.
Tier Three words are low-frequency specialized terms like “shoal,” “theocracy,” and “neuron” that are limited to specific fields of study. Words in this category can be explained in context when students encounter them or as the need arises.”
After you have completed your list, you will create a Google Slide, Canva, or other presentation to present the list. Include:
A title slide
An overview of the lesson/grade that relates to these vocabulary words
Your tiered list of words (perhaps one tier on each slide)
At least one example of an explicit instruction activity you would use to teach the words
A slide for any references in APA formatting.
