Write a paper discussing the ways that literacy has impacted you in the past. Now is the time to examine the reading and writing you do on a daily basis.The goal in this unit is to help us better understand the way that “writing is completely dependent on the situation, readers, and uses it’s being created for” (Wardle and Downs 8). In order to analyze reading and writing that you are currently doing, we will be using a rhetorical framework for your study. In a rhetorical analysis, you will look at current writing you do and identify the rhetorical decisions you are making in those situations. Then, you will evaluate your use of rhetorical strategies to see how effective you current your choices were in responding to the rhetorical situation at hand. Task To do this, you will look at a piece of written discourse that you’ve produced recently and evaluate how effective your use of rhetorical strategies were. Remember: the effectiveness of rhetorical strategies is wholly dependent on the needs of the rhetorical situation (audience, exigence, and constraints). The goal here is to look at the relationship between rhetorical strategies and rhetorical situations. You will need to use specific examples and evidence to support your paper’s overall argument. Your argument for this paper will relate to how effective or ineffective your uses of rhetorical strategies were based on the situation in/for which you wrote. First, choose a piece or set of written discourse that you want to rhetorically analyze. The discourse should be your own writing and should have been produced within the past 6 months. Work from this class will not count as a sample. Rather, this about writing from memorable rhetorical situations or situations in which you write regularly: social media posts, scholarship essays, text messages, civic or public writing, etc. Once you’ve chosen the written discourse to study, begin by identifying the parts of the rhetorical situation you composed in. You should use textual support from Carroll and Grant-Davie to help you to do this. Identify the exigencies, audiences, and constraints of the situation and begin analyzing how these parts shaped your discourse. Finally, (and most importantly) you’ll want to evaluate your discourse’s respond to the rhetorical situation. To do this follow Carroll’s questions on pages 55 and 56 of her article.
