Technology-Related Philosophical Questioning
You have the opportunity at your workplace to participate in a Digital Frontiers committee with several of your colleagues. This committee’s mission is to bridge the gap between philosophical questions and new digital technologies, such as social media. For your first committee assignment, you’ve been asked to develop a white paper in which you examine how a philosophical concept applies to questions that arise from our digital world.
Drawing on your prior knowledge of philosophical concepts (including utilitarianism, deontology, virtue ethics, rationalism, empiricism, postmodernism, idealism, and materialism), write a 3- to 4-page paper that explores one of the suggested philosophical questions below, or a similar question of your own choosing that is of particular interest to you. Note that if you select a question not on the list, be sure to ask your faculty Subject Matter Expert for approval of your question.
What value does technology provide to life?
Does technology require new ethical guidelines?
How does technology affect what we consider a good relationship with another person?
In what ways has technology changed the way we experience the world?
Does technology change what we claim as knowledge or our world?
What role should the government play in protecting our privacy and/or providing security in the digital world?
In your paper, be sure to include a central thesis and at least three supporting arguments informed by one or more of the philosophical concepts you have learned about. Refer to Guidelines on Writing a Philosophy Paper for more information. Use evidence pulled from academic sources to support your arguments. Finally, provide a reference list of all your cited sources.
Before submitting your Assessment, carefully review the rubric. This is the same rubric the assessor will use to evaluate your submission and it provides detailed criteria describing how to achieve or master the Competency.
