Kindred and Little Fires Everywhere broach the idea of family and kinship in many interesting and important ways. As we discussed in class, family is a fundamental unit of society, but it is one that we do not always choose for ourselves. Families may center around many axes: biological, emotional, cultural, and others. For many people, family, whoever that is, evokes a sense of belonging, love, and above all obligation: an obligation to their family of more thought, consideration, and forgiveness than they owe other persons, whether or not they chose their family. Focusing on one novel–not both –explore how one of the novels reconceptualize how we think about family and kin? What particular painful issues does the novel under consideration bring to light? When writing on this question, it is possible to access what your group discussed but keep in mind that your ideas should be your own. You will need to narrow this down and if you write on Kindred, you must engage the fact that Kindred is a graphic novel so you must discuss both words and images.
There will be a clear line of argumentation and relevant and valid conclusions. Though not required, these papers may have taken the additional step of consulting peer-reviewed articles on the topic and brought them to bear on the discussion as necessary.
