DISCUSSION ASSIGNMENT INSTRUCTIONS
The purpose of these discussions is to ensure
that you and your chair understand the work that you have done and the steps needed to finish.
For each discussion, you will write a short, informal thread detailing your work up to this current
module. Your thread should be between 150 – 400 words. No peer replies are required for this
assignment; however, you are encouraged to read your peers’ threads and provide
encouragement to build community.
How to Write Progress Report – Module 6 Discussion
Introduction
Begin with a brief overview of your current dissertation journey and explain the purpose of the progress report. Introduce your proposed research topic and explain why it is important or relevant to your field of study. Connect your discussion to the value of effective planning, persistence, and research development. Include a transition that introduces the progress made during the current week.
Section 1: Proposed Topic
Clearly state the proposed dissertation or research topic. Explain the specific issue, problem, or area of interest being investigated. Provide a brief explanation of why the topic is significant and how it contributes to existing knowledge or practice. If the topic has evolved from earlier ideas, explain any refinements that have occurred.
Section 2: Progress During the Past Week
Describe the specific work completed during the week. Discuss readings completed, literature reviewed, databases explored, sources gathered, notes organized, or sections drafted. Mention any progress related to refining the research question, identifying themes, creating outlines, or strengthening understanding of the topic area. Explain how these activities contributed to overall research development.
Section 3: Challenges or Roadblocks Encountered

Conclude with a brief reflection on the importance of consistency and adaptability in the dissertation process. Emphasize how progress, even when challenges occur, contributes to long-term success and completion of research goals.
