I am a Beverly Hills Police, Fire, and Medical resources dispatcher. I answer 911 calls. A team of 13. You are required to submit a one page draft document that will inform me about the ethical problem in the workplace that you wish to examine and the ethical system, theory, or concept you will use to examine it. Example: You may look at an ethical problem in a Public Health organization through the lens of Utilitarian Ethics.You must have both components: an Ethical Problem plus an Ethical philosophy to apply to the problem. You can talk about my workplace, or you can use a notional workplace: State of Wakanda, Stonewall Jackson County , Alfred E. Neuman City, no problem. Just make sure you have an ethical problem, and you examine this problem through the ethical and moral concepts taught in an Ethic and Professionalism graduate level course.Everyone has an ethical problem in the workplace . It is like parts of our anatomy, everyone has one. The issue is what is the ethical philosophy that explains this problem? If you just submit an ethical problem in the workplace with no ethical philosophy I might respond “that’s mildly interesting”. Or: so, what? ,who cares?, or says who? The ethical philosophies give you a solid foundation to base your ethical arguments. It was like our sexual harassment discussion . Is it wrong? Most high school students when presented with this problem would respond and say “yes, it’s wrong”. But why? because it violates administrative law? Someone could make it legal. It is against policy? Change the policy to make it okay? Most would agree that that is not a satisfactory ethical response.In class we discussed how no one likes to be harassed. If that is true, how can you ethically accept or condone harassment? Do unto others, as you would have others do unto you. This is the basis of many religious philosophies. Who can argue against it? So even if you made harassment legal or within policy from the point of view of ethics it would be immoral. This is how you need to think about ethical problems in the workplace.
