Cultural Identity Paper: Submit a 3-5 page (typed double spaced, Times New Roman, 12 pt. font) paper detailing your cultural identity. Discuss factors that influence your identity, communication practices you engage in that reflect/build your identity; and the values and cultural patterns evident in your cultural identity. Break the paper up into the following sections (I have included what section of the book to reference and the approximate length of each section): Identify and define your cultural identity (Chapter 4): Up to ½ page. How do you define your identity? What are your racial, ethnic, & national origin influences that make up your particular concept of your cultural identity? What role do race, gender, class, orientation, geographic region, groups you belong to etc. play in this definition? Discuss what factors influenced your cultural identity development (Chapter 4): ½-1 page What factors influenced your identity development? Consider the influence of parents, grandparents, other family, communities, education experiences, religion, race, ethnicity, gender, ancestors, etc. Are there particular myths or stories I remember from childhood that have helped to define me and reveal my cultural values to me? Are there particular rituals I remember from childhood that have helped to define my cultural identity? Identify where your primary culture(s) fall on Hofstede/GLOBE’s Cultural Dimensions and in Kluckhohn and Strodtbecks Value Orientations. 1½ to 2 pages What are the cultural patterns (Hofstede) and values (Kluckhohn and Strodtbeck) of your culture(s)? Do you abide by or ascribe to them? For example, if your culture is considered collectivist, do you see yourself as more collectivist or more individualist? What accounts for this? Discuss and provide examples of specific and distinct communication practices found within your culture(s) (Chapters 6 & 7): 1½ to 2 pages What are some of the communication practices (verbal and nonverbal) that reflect your cultural identity? How does your personal cultural profile affect how you communicate both informally with friends and family, and in more formal settings as, for example, an internship, the classroom, or a club? Some aspects of communication style you could comment on are: topics you frequently find yourself talking about; use of nonverbal communication (haptics, vocalics, kinesics, emblems, territoriality, etc); use of interruption; use of silence; affinity for or dislike of argumentation; channels of communication you rely on.
