The title of the course is “Personhood.” Using various examples throughout the course, we explore ways society has constructed the idea of personhood and who/what is given space within personhood.Tom Kitwood defines personhood as “A standing or status that is bestowed upon one human being by others, in the context of relationship and social being. It implies recognition, respect and trust.”Using this model of personhood, explore the relevant issues surrounding artificial intelligence (AI) and the potentiality of AI’s inclusion into personhood, then build an argument for or against AI’s inclusion into personhood.Questions to consider: Can a machine become a person? Is intelligence the only factor in being considered a person? Can AI develop emotions and social skills? What of AI’s ability to participate in the legal system?
