Pick one film from each list and discuss the similarities and differences in style between them. In what ways are they similar?

In the first half of this course we watched and discussed nine different films, eight of which were made during the Classic Hollywood Era: Scarface, Baby Face, Meet Me in St. Louis, Singin’ in the Rain, Sunset Boulevard, Vertigo, High Noon, and On the Waterfront. In the second half of this course we watched and discussed seven different films produced after (or in the last gasps of) the Classic Hollywood Era: Touch of Evil, The Aviator, Breathless, The Last Picture Show, Taxi Driver, No Country for Old Men, and Do the Right Thing. Pick one film from each list and discuss the similarities and differences in style between them. Your discussion should incorporate elements such as cinematography, mise-en-scene, editing, and sound. (Pick at least two elements to discuss in-depth.) In what ways are they similar? How do their approaches to style differ? How do the differences reflect the shift from Classic Hollywood to New Hollywood? What else might account for these differences? (Themes? Context?)
