Assignment Question

Task: Use your topics and research sources from the previous assignments to argue a position. Though most essays are persuasive or argumentative in some way, this essay will be directly argumentative. Research enough to understand both sides of the argument and use your research to formulate an opinion on your topic, this is your arguable position. Your task will be to RESEARCH, INFORM, AND ARGUE, a paper that thoroughly explores the topic of your choosing while taking a clear stance on that topic. Don’t tell me that self-driving cars have both positive and negative impacts on society, pick a side and argue clearly for that side! (for example). These topics are meant to reach across departmental boundaries to be more accessible to those of you that are not specifically on track for a liberal arts degree. Use your field, potential curriculum track, or other supplementary interests to fuel your approach. **Be sure to make your position clear! Do not just research and inform me on the topic. I want you to clearly argue a position, and support your argument with outside research sources. MAKE IT CLEAR WHERE YOU STAND! As always, feel free to join me during office hours, or email me with tentative topics, questions, comments, or concerns. This is your longest paper for the semester for a reason. I want you to use your structure and organizational skills to most effectively argue your perspective. The beginning of your paper should briefly and objectively summarize your topic, and then you will build your argument, using evidence and a logical progression (remember to avoid logical fallacies!) of ideas to persuade your audience. Remember, any material referenced must be cited in MLA format. An MLA works cited page must be attached at the end of your paper utilizing at least 5 outside sources—preferably ones discovered during your annotated bibliography phase, but of course it’s okay to incorporate other research as needed. Assume your audience (your instructor) knows little, or nothing about your topic; this may very well be the case! Remember the three techniques for integrating source material: Summary, paraphrase, and direct quotation. Consider the rhetorical modes and strategies we’ve reviewed this semester. Papers must contain 5 credible secondary sources. Papers with improper MLA citation will suffer grade reduction. Papers with sources that are not credible will suffer grade reduction. See me with questionable source material. MLA format requirements: As per the model provided in Week 2, your documents should all feature: Times New Roman 12 pt. font An appropriate heading, and page numbers A Works Cited and correct in text citations where applicable One inch margins Double spaced throughout the document
