1.) Why is it important for employees to stay motivated in the workplace? First of all, since I am medically retired I do not have a “current job” to reference. I will, however, reference my previous role as a technical support representative. Motivation feeds productivity. It really is as simple as that. We learn this in the Army from day one. An employee without motivation is bound to either fail or produce lackluster results. Two examples from my last job in which motivation was achieved are as follows: Regular team meetings. These meetings provide motivation in two different ways. Firstly, it is a break from the monotonous tasks of the day. Going into the meeting means that you can set your work aside for a time, and that is always a good feeling (unless you are stressing over unfinished tasks). Secondly, assuming you have a motivational leader, hearing from them can help to inspire you. It does not necessarily have to be a purely motivational speech, but one of the key roles of a leader is to motivate their subordinates. Incentives. At my previous job, they had some really great incentives. A handful of the top performers were given a paid for vacation. This was done on a yearly basis, and served as a goal for every employee to strive for. If you were in charge of writing security policies, how would you convince upper management, who usually knows very little about technology, to implement the new policies? I have found that providing real world examples is an excellent way to sway a person from their stubborn (and oftentimes incorrect) opinions. You simply cannot argue with facts (unless you are just being argumentative for the sake of being argumentative, in which case I hope you would not be in any sort of leadership role, let alone upper management). For instance, if I were trying to implement a policy concerning user permissions, I might look for a story where an insider used their excessive permissions in order to carry out a malicious attack against their organization. Statistics are also effective, provided they exist. 2.) Why is it important for employees to stay motivated in the workplace? Provide at least two ways in which motivation is achieved in your current job? This is a topic that I think plagues most companies in the US. Motivation is something that comes and goes, some days you will be motivated and some days you will want to curl up with some ben and jerry’s and binge watch Netflix. I think the real challenge in motivating the people is how do you spark the flame of drive in someone. Motivation is intrinsic in the success of an organization in that the more motivated employees are the more engaged they will be. On top of that highly motivated employees are more efficient in the following categories; problem solving, innovativeness, creativity, and customer satisfaction. Alison Napolitano states that understanding your employees is detrimental in getting to the root of motivation. Alison further states that engaged, not engaged, and actively disengaged are the three types of employees. Engaged being the employees that are highly motivated, passionate and the centrical force behind propelling a company to success. Actively disengaged employees are employees who are disgruntled and are unhappy consequently bringing that attitude to work and effecting the mood of others. The middle ground of these two would be not engaged which is essentially workers who are there physically but are completely absent mentally. When you know your employees and what drives them, you set yourself up for success. Just simply taking an interest in them and investing in them shows that you care and that alone will prove to make all the difference. Security policies such as an email policy or acceptable use policy are written by the CIO or member of the IT department. If you were in charge of writing security policies how would you convince upper management, who usually knows very little about technology, to implement the new policies? If I were in charge of constructing security policies and seeing to it that the people above me ensured the implementation of these security Policies its simple (in theory). I would put together separate documentation the outlines the potential penalties of the violations of the security policies, solutions for maintaining moral and motivation, and I would include case studies where corporations were penalized and how that affected the corporations, their employees, and their livelihood.
