ASSIGNMENT: Observe, record, research, and analyze the experience of a work of art (CHOOSE ONE FROM LIST BELOW) in 2-3 double-spaced pages. We’ve discussed how the environment that surrounds us or our lived experience can also inform the way we approach and think about what we see. This assignment asks you to do two things: First, to analyze your personal experience in viewing this work and connect what you experience to the work’s formal and symbolic attributes. Carefully observe your physical experience while looking. Are there moments when the work is engaging senses other than vision? If so, what are they? How is the artist using form or symbols to make you feel that way? What about the works, do figures seem to be engaging other senses? If your work is a building, does the building encourage the people inside to have a particular physical experience? It’s helpful to write down notes and observations as you look.HOW TO WRITE ABOUT YOUR EXPERIENCE IN AN ACADEMIC WAY: Most academic assignments do not ask you to describe a subjective (i.e. personal) experience, so it can be challenging to figure out how to write about how you feel according to academic standards. One of the first ways to think about your experience as something you can study and describe is to go back to our exercises that rely on formal analysis. All images are created with formal elements (line, color, shape, scale, light, composition) or symbolic elements (colors that we associate with feelings, signs that correspond to physical behavior, etc.) that can influence how we feel. You want to look at those elements, relate them to what you experience, and explain how they cause it.- Provide a brief description of the work you choose, making sure to note any important formal or symbolic features.- Summarize your experience looking at the work. Pay particular attention to how you feel physically. Do you imagine you can hear something? Taste something? Touch something? Smell something? If you feel an emotion, where do you feel it in your body?- Link those physical or imagined sensations to what you see in the work. Is there a sharp, zig-zagged line that might suggest something painful? Is there a food depicted that you’ve tried in the past, do you remember the taste? You want to show how visual aspects of your work are engaging your other senses, either in the moment or through memory.- What have other viewers said about their experiences? This part of the project will require some research. Reviews, scholarly essays, exhibition histories, news reports, and social media can all count as valid research sources in this case.RESEARCH REQUIREMENTS: This paper does require at least 2 research sources to support your analysis of viewer experience. Because you will be working with many forms of images, these sources may not be explicitly academic (i.e. an academic book or peer-reviewed journal), but you should be sure that they are reliable. Reliable sources include any form of academic publication, established news media, film reviews, press releases, and so on. You may also find that your image’s history leads you to more uncertain sources, such as social media posts.
