What is meant by interpretation? Often this means developing your
understanding of the details in the work…in particular, one aspect of the work.
When writing an analysis of literature, you will focus on a central issue, not the
piece(s) as a whole. Your job is not to say everything about a literary work(s);
rather it is to develop a clear understanding about a specific aspect of the work.
Good interpretations generally arise from good questions. What is it about a
work(s) that intrigues you?
From a good question, student compose a good thesis statement. With a good
thesis, students write a good interpretation/analysis.
Regarding Hamlet and A Raisin in the Sun:
Question: How do the relationships between mothers and sons [fathers and sons;
lovers/spouses; etc.] drive the two plays to their respective endings?
