Yet so many people are easily swept into going along with others in their families or in their workplaces to be accepted or to avoid being seen as different, difficult, or possibly not as smart as others. There are a variety of reasons why we conform even when we experience inner conflict, such as when acting in obedience to authority. This is another example where cognitive dissonance comes into play and might contribute to social inhibition (the opposite social facilitation).
