Write a research paper on the topic, “What Constitutes an Opinion?”

Write a research paper on the topic, “What Constitutes an Opinion?”Take any idea about, or approach to public opinion that we have learned about up until this point in the course and write an argumentative essay in which you make an original claim about the idea and support it. This is an opportunity to focus your attention on any of the ideas about public opinion that have come up so far in our course that are of particular interest to you. For example, you might choose to write an essay in which you argue that civility and detachment are essential qualities for debate in the public sphere (or the opposite), or compare the arguments made about civility and detachment in the four normative theories of the public sphere. Your essay will be between 1000 to 1200 words, not including in-text citations and references.
Your paper will be evaluated based on its internal logic and writing effectiveness (i.e. how well you structure and support your argument). You only need to do minimal outside research in order to write this paper, and I would argue that your time and energy will be better spent focusing on concepts from our class readings and discussions, and crafting a careful argument in your essay. That said, you will want to cite the sources you use, even if they are just the readings from class. For this please follow a consistent citation style (APA, MLA, Chicago etc.). APA citation style is particularly recommended as most courses in the BCDM program, including the Final Year Project, stipulate using APA. Part of your grade is determined by your formatting, and failure to comply with a citation style will result in a lower grade.
Remember that the main point of the paper is to show you understand concepts from class and can make an original argument about them. To show you understand the concepts, it is essential that you define them in the paper, and you should use our course materials for your definitions. That is, do not just Google the terms and use a random source for your definition. Do a close reading of the course text and use the definitions you find there. It is mandatory to use at least one quotation from the assigned course readings. Mention the relevant page number(s) for the quotes regardless of the citation style that you are following. Essays that largely rely on non-class sources will receive a lower grade.
